Racing is often complicated and difficult to predict, yet, at times it works out exactly according to the script when the best horses win for fun. That was the case at Turffontein on Saturday as Malmoos and War of Athena again asserted their dominance over Highveld contemporaries, just as the majority of punters expected.
In winning the G1 SA Derby and G2 SA Oaks, Malmoos (Mike de Kock) and War of Athena (Paul Matchett) completed a distinguished sweep of the Triple Crown and Triple Tiara. All three legs are staged at Turffontein, over distances from 1600m, then 1800m, up to a test of stamina over 2450m.
It takes a seriously smart, and adaptable, thoroughbred to manage this feat so full credit to these two outstanding racehorses. Interestingly, Malmoos’’ trainer Mike de Kock has spoken about being even more creative with the concept – in America the Triple Crown is also run over increasing distances but takes place in three different cities.
He’s proposed that SA adapts a similar sequence – it could, by way of illustration, involve taking in the Cape Guineas @ Kenilworth, SA Classic in Joburg and the Daily News @ Greyville in Durban over the period of a couple of months to really test the mettle of our premier three year olds’’.
In practice, this would require tweaking the program, making inter-provincial travel more feasible and the joint co-operation of racing authorities working in harmony and is an innovative suggestion well-worth exploring.
Got the Greenlight (speed score 108+) took out the G1 Horse Chestnut with his trademark burst of acceleration carrying him well clear going into the final 200m. Copper Mountain (s/s 107) launched a spirited late bid to get within half a length, only for Got the Greenlight to rally and land still another short odds- on victory on the day for favourite backers.
True to Life (s/s 106) was also impressive in a Pinnacle Stakes. She lugged in across the track, just as Malmoos was to do in his Derby demolition job, but never looked in any danger as this ace sprinter gave weight and a thrashing to three year-old filly, Anna Capri (s/s 99.)
Princess Calla (s/s 100+) and Seeking the Stars (s/s 99+) came out on tops at Scottsville’s Sunday program in 1400m G3’s. It appeared that both won with something in hand which is born out by the figures – Seeking the Stars has scored 105 in the past and Princess Calla managed 106 during the Cape Summer.
