Mid- Winter Wind (speed score 102) took out the Byerleyy Turk, a Grade 3 at Greyville on Sunday with a fluent stretch run to justify heavy market support.
Sean Tarry’s entry was punted from 10’s into 5/2 and duly built on his last out speed score of 100 + at Turffontein to secure the win. The son of What a Winter has now won four on the bounce as he continues to improve on fine Highveld form, now that he’s down at the coast.
He was chased in at a respectful distance by Gimmeanotherchance (s/s 99) with Red Bomber (s/s 97) rounding out the trifecta.
Original favourite, Snow Pilot was unsighted – it was if the Cape Guineas winner had lost a leg as he drifted from 18/10 to 8/1. Meanwhile. Justin Snaith trained stable companion Underworld never settled and folded tamely in the straight.
Snaith was spot on, though, with Double Grand Slam (s/s 102) who earned the same speed fig as Mid-Winter Wind in the preceding Umzimkhulu Stakes (G3). The Prix du Cap winning filly sired by Vercingetorix romped impressively by five lengths, way clear of Tarry’s entry, Mia Moo (s/s 92). That’s how deep odds- on shots should win!
Tarry enjoyed a productive afternoon as Winter Greeting (s/s 98 +) sidled to victory in a 1000m scuttle, the Kwa Zulu Natal Stakes. The daughter of What a Winter has now won five of nine starts and is as comfortable in mile races as she is over the short cuts. That versatility gives her expert conditioner plenty of options in the coming months.
