Tenango hit one of the biggest numbers in recent years at Scottsville’s Golden Horse Sprint, a G2 over 1200m. After crunching the track variant, he merited a monster figure of 117, which included a flashy come home sectional of 43.5 seconds for the final 800m and 22.66 for the closing 400m.
That constitutes a truly high- class performance by the Candice Bass Robinson trained son of Canford Cliffs, who has been transformed since a successful wind op. Andrew Fortune guided him from off the pace to challenge inside the distance and they drew clear of pace-presser, O’Tenikwa (s/s 114) and the back-in- form, early leader, King of the Gauls (s/s 110.)
Though well-beaten, Truth (s/s 108) ran credibly to get fourth spot. In a weaker year, a number of 108 may have been good enough to win. But Tenango ran off the charts to obliterate his foes in a domineering, sprinting tour de force.
Stallion Canford Cliffs also sired the winner of the Allan Robertson – a Gr 1 for 2YO fillies. Direct Hit (s/s 97) bought the best figures into the race based on her Eastern and Western Cape victories, and she maintained the same quality to score comfortably over Elegantrix (s/s 95.)
Good for You (s/s 89) pulled off a Gr 1 for Glen Kotzen’s team when making a mid- race move under Chad Little and just lasting over Charming Cheetah in the Gold Medallion. The winner is a 2YO Legislate gelding. The time was relatively slow compared to the other featured races down the straight and it seemed he made his break away at just the right moment. 10/1 in early trade, he was backed down to around 4’s and returned a measly R3.80 on the Tote.
A slim quilt could have covered the first four in the Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint. In fact, even seventh placed filly, Rascova was only 1.5 length adrift. Once the photo was developed, it was revealed that Mia Moo (s/s 101+) had snuck in from a charging, Asiye Phambili, Mrs Browning and rail, hugging, Chasing Happiness.
Sean Tarry, who has a stellar record in this race, trains the very game daughter of Vercingetorix. After finding form towards the end of the Cape Summer season, she has gained in strength on the Highveld and in KZN. She is now a winner of six out of 16 starts. Callan Murray was the ultra- consistent filly’s jockey.
There were several hard luck stories after this race. Racing in tight quarters towards the inner and a bunched finish saw plenty of scrimmaging. For example, Double Grand Slam will fancy her chances of extracting revenge with a clearer round over a touch further.
