Abashiri (speed score 102+) justified his big reputation and favouritism when making an early run to easily win the Gauteng Guineas at Turffontein. He has been most consistent to date – regularly running triple digit figs, and displays the scope and temperament to build a stellar career. Trainer Azzie made comparisons with his former hero National Currency, which is high praise as that one attained a stratospheric speed score of 117 when at his peak!

Sean Tarry has a knack of producing a rabbit out of the hat on marquee days. The champion trainer won the Fillies Guineas with long-shot Heaps Of Fun (s/s 96) who capsized odds on favourite Negroamaro (s/s 95) with Frosty Friday (s/s 93+) running well from a wide draw. Earlier, Tarry’s entry Off the Mark (s/s 98) showed good improvement and a neat finishing burst to clinch the Acacia Handicap. Sensible Lover (97) enjoyed being back on the Highveld, running boldly for second ahead of Noor (s/s 95) and Cassie o Malley (s/s 95).

Captain Aldo received an inspired ride from Bernard Fayd Herbe to win a false run Hawaii Stakes by a nut from Lazer Star. The filly would have won but for shifting out in the run to the line, but full credit to the winning rider for stoking up the five year old gelding to produce such a big finish. Ice Machine and Unparalleled closed just too late and filled the places.

On the same card, Trading Profit (s/s 103) won a Pinnacle Stakes from Judicial (s/s 100), with short-priced fav French Navy stuttering tamely into fourth. The victor had finished two lengths behind Abashiri at his last start – which foretold the Guineas winner’s explosive performance later in the day. Trading Profit delivered a career best over the 1800m trip, and should be closely watched as he keeps on improving for veteran conditioner, Ormond Ferraris.
