Louis The King (s/s 110) had run really well in the Daily News to get close to the awesome Legislate, despite a torrid passage. Given what Legislate is accomplishing, it seems that any horse able to get within spitting distance of the champ is liable to pick up a big race in SA. That is what Louis The King achieved when coming with a perfectly timed finish under man-of-the-moment Piere Strydom to win the Gauteng Sansui Summer Cup at Turffontein.

Outsider Killua Castle had skipped clear and looked a likely winner only to be outrun close to the line. The stable exacta was yet another triumph for trainer Geoff Woodruff who has an excellent record in this race. Louis The King won the Triple Crown at three, and in clinching this testing Grade 1 contest under a heavy burden showed that he is training on into a very fine racehorse indeed.

Lazer Star (speed score 104) was seriously impressive when going three for three and winning the Magnolia Handicap. She had no trouble dismissing a strong field of sprinting fillies and mares and should be followed till beaten. In another excellent performance from a young talent, Trip To Heaven (speed score 105) enjoyed returning to the straight as he blitzed older rivals to easily win the Merchants.

Unparalled (speed score 101) won the Dingaans. It was an improved effort by the son of Lateral, who took advantage of market fancies (Harry’s Son, Jayyed and Siren’s Call) not firing their best shots. Likewise, heavily supported Carry on Alice proved no match for mud-lark, Arcetri Pink (s/s 102) in the Ipi Tombe Challenge, as the Woodruff barn took home yet another big prize.
