Kangaroo Jack (speed score 101+) is a smart sprinter. He snuck through down the rail to win the Grade 3 Spring Spree Stakes at Turffontein with a minimum of fuss from Angel’s Power (s/s 97). He is sure to win races at a higher level during the upcoming Highveld feature season.
Myfunnyvalentine (s/s 93) was another to make a winning return after a few months off track. She clinched a Stakes race after that three month pause, and seems to be making neat improvement after a promising juvenile campaign.
In Cape Town, Goodtime Gal (s/s 98) won a blanket finish from an unlucky Can Cope (s/s 98) who blew the start then finished strongly to get beat a nut. Favourite, Francia (s/s 97) was close up in third in a hard-fought contest. Later on, Star Chestnut was well handled by Richard Fourie to win an Allowance Plate from a handy position. Stable mate Krambambulli is worth taking out of this race for future reference. He stayed on nicely, despite switching out, in an encouraging run after gelding, so can pick up a fifth win one of these days.
In that race, Justin Snaith trained the first three home. The yard is maintaining excellent form, cleaning up in PE on Friday’s and churning out a succession of winners in Cape Town. Michael Robinson, Goodtime Gal’s conditioner also continues on a hot streak – he too was mentioned in last week’s newsletter and has added another couple of winners since.
Anime, who had previously run as high as 97 over 1000m, was favoured to score at Scottsville, but she got lumbered by debutante Seatops (s/s 84+) in a 1200m event. The winner was backed from a big price into 12/1. Jockey Keagan de Melo was inspired on the day riding three winners, two seconds and a third, skilfully getting a number of wacky long-shots to outrun their odds.
