A few months ago, Interbet readers of this newsletter were informed about the “Business of Betting” podcast as a useful resource with extensive information about all aspects of the global gambling industry. Recently I lucked into another podcast series, “Bet with the Best”, hosted by Chris Larmey.

The thoughtful and articulate host is still building up his podcast portfolio, but there are already several very interesting interviews with successful horse racing bettors from America. They discuss their gambling origins, wagering methods/strategies together with entertaining “war stories’ of their biggest wins – and, inevitably, the freak-out losses.

There is an overload of tipping info out there with selections and handicapping opinions widely distributed but not nearly as much wise counsel on how to make money by betting smart – something which is addressed in the excellent “Bet with the Best” series.

Lengthy conversations with well-established pro players in the States reveal what works for them, and, conversely, expose flawed approaches in an exceedingly tough game. Horseplaying is changing quickly in this highly competitive, modern wagering era. These pros recognize that what constituted a clever tactic a few years ago may no longer be a source of profits and so they constantly reappraise their game plans.

It’s been noted in this newsletter before that there are no absolutely right or wrong ways to bet. It’s a matter of personal style where every one of us has different temperaments, skill levels, goals and amounts of capital available for betting. For example, some have an instinctive propensity to gamble boldly whilst others prefer to be more conservative with their investments.

The trick, like playing any sport as well as possible, is to find out through experience what style and methods work best for you. Though quite difficult to find, there are resources out there in books, podcast or website format which can help punters improve their wagering strategies.

It’s not only about what to bet (having good selections) but knowing how to bet is hugely important, too. In the old days before exotics, punters could only bet win or place on their fancy if they deemed the odds favorable – a simple decision. The rise of exotic betting has changed the landscape completely though, providing loads of opportunity across the many wagering types/pools, but also plenty of pitfalls for the whimsical or misguided.

Betting markets, (be they fixed odds or exotic pools) are highly efficient nowadays and reckless money management or wasteful ticket construction can really set players back badly, even if they are pretty decent with their selections.

Listen to “Bet with the Best” when you have an idle couple of hours. You may ultimately disagree with some of Larmey’s guests’ suggestions or find them unsuitable given your personal circumstances. But, just thinking more deeply about how to find an edge and bet optimally will prove beneficial…
