There were some notable performances at Turffontein on Saturday, currently staging the best quality racing in the country. S’manga Khumalo cleaned up winning six races, including the Juvenile features on well-bred debutant Flying Myth (speed score 85+) and Exquisite Touch (s/s 85++) both of whom flash smart potential.
Amongst others, Khumalo also got Buckland (s/s 98) up to deny Pure Blonde (s/s 97) in a humdinger to the Gold Rush Sprint, and then closed out the meeting on Intergalactic (s/s 93) in a mid-level handicap.
Mod Barley had only won three races going into a Pinnacle Stakes, but his earlier speed figures (105 – 106) hinted that he is capable of many more victories. He duly went start to finish (s/s 101+) to record a much deserved success, when staving off the dependable Aurum Pot (s/s 100). Another triple digit number was achieved by Val et Al (s/s100) in the Egoli Mile. The three year old has now won half of his six starts and is developing into a really good performer worth following.
Michael Azzie trained Easy Game (s/s 98) and Spring Wonder (s/s 92) ran one-two in the Bauhinia Sprint. They were always handily positioned, and with none of the off pace runners getting into contention, maintained their positions to lift the spoils.
Two performances in Cape Town are worthy of a mention. Promising Western Winter youngster Attenborough (s/s 84) outduelled Cream Soda Green (s/s 83) in a juvenile dash, and then Silver Snaffles (s/s 94) slammed rivals in a handicap. The latter benefitted from having a tongue tie fitted and should go on to beat stronger fields based on this fluent win.
