She’s a Keeper (speed score 103) is on a roll and she stretched her winning streak to five out of six when zipping down the centre of the Greyville straight to take the WSB 1900.
Her previous best of 105 attained in the Scarlet Lady gave her a big chance here off a low weight of 50kg’s, more so after the scratching of Belgarion, and she duly received strong market support. The daughter of Gimmethegreenlight quickened up well coming off the bend then held off two longshots – Matterhorn (s/s 102) and three year-old, Shavout (s/s 100).
She was partnered by Warren Kennedy who also rode Keep on Dancing (s/s 100) to victory in the East Coast Cup. This Silvano filly was well beaten by She’s a Keeper a month ago and took advantage of lesser opposition to triumph, though another out of that Scarlet Lady form-line, Scented Mistress (s/s 99) gave her a real run for her money.
In fact, the runner up may have gotten closer but for going slightly wide around the turn and jinking around in the straight. Still, full credit to Keep on Dancing for maintaining smart form in landing her 4th win this year.
Dual Durban July winner Do It Again was a warm order to win a Pinnacle Stakes as part of his prep for another tilt at the big race. He got the job done at odds-on – but only just under strong left-handed urgings as Sir Michael matched strides with him right down to the wire. Do It Again merited a speed figure of 101 + on Sunday – in his prime he would run around 115.
He is clearly a difficult horse to work with and was equipped with cheek pieces and a nose band. He also hung in the straight which does not inspire total confidence that all is well physically. However, some of his best runs have come 2nd up after a freshening and when he is on song he remains an extremely high class performer with a beautiful action and turn of foot.
Do It Again will not be short of support to claim a third Durban July, especially if he is mentally in the right space, though he will need to up his current game to former levels to achieve that remarkable feat.
