Feature races were staged right around the country over the weekend, kickstarted by the East Cape Derby won in emphatic manner by Chollima (speed score 98). Glen Kotzen’s Pathfork ex Chillon three-year-old had run well in the first Leg of the Winter Series at Kenilworth behind Gem King and Future Prince over a mile and proved much the best stretching out in this longer 2400m PE contest.

Another eye-catcher on the Fairview card was Ekoria (speed score 93) in the Dahlia Plate. The Futura juvenile is trained by Gavin Smith and was ridden to a fluent victory by JP van der Merwe, in the process earning a smart time figure for a baby.

At the opposite end of the age band, 2 x Durban July stalwart, Do It Again showed he still has some spring left in his legs when scoring decisively in the Greyville 1900 (G2) on Saturday. Not far off his 8th birthday, he showed that he can still turn it on, using his gliding action to record a notable speed figure of 111 when easily beating Mount Anderson (s/s 106) and Gainsford (s/s 106). Further back in the ruck were Crown Towers (s/s 105), Litigation (s/s 104) Crimson King (s/s 104) and Shampompo Shampizi (s/s 103).

Gimmethegreenlight mare She’s a Keeper (s/s 105) was punted with confidence to lift the KRA East Coast Cup. The hot 11/10 favorite used superior acceleration to blast clear of the opposition –next best was Princess Anastasia, Scented Mistress & Keep on Dancing who all ran figs of 100. La Luvia and Black Silver managed 99’s just behind the placed horses – respectable enough efforts but well short of what the very talented She’s a Keeper is capable of on a going day.

Ululate won the Syringa Handicap at Turffontein on Sunday after being backed in from 10’s to 6/1. She has a good record on the inside track and proved a length better than market- favoured Homely Girl in receipt of 3,5kg’s from her younger rival. Muzi Yeni rode the daughter of Ideal World for trainer St John Gray.

Earlier Willow Magic (s/s 101) and Team Gold (s/s 97) attained nice scores. The latter is from Roy Magner’s yard – he continues to fire out winners as he followed up on a Thursday treble at the Vaal with a double over the weekend.
