The Cape Racing and Breeding Awards were held during the week at the beautiful Molenvliet Estate in the Stellenbosch winelands. What follows is a list of the winners in the various categories together with their best speed figures from the past season. This gives an idea of what it takes to come out on top in South Africa. Performances from all around the country counted, with the Cape Racing section being open to horses trained by Western Cape domiciled trainers, and the Breeding division obviously open only to horses bred in the region.

Nominations for the upcoming National Equus Awards have different qualifying criteria, although this provincial review already provides a good ranking basis for South Africa’s current equine elite, given that 24 out of 28 Grade 1 races for 2016/17 were won by thoroughbreds from the Western Cape.
