The racing during the transitional month of August is of a lower quality than in peak season, but still there are occasional performances to get enthusiastic about. Evening Breeze (s/s 99) alternates shockers with winning runs so was due a better effort on Thursday after a last start fail. The Kahal filly is a smart sprinter based on that Turffontein victory. Speedy Gonvarlez (s/s 98) also looks well above average. Not striding out just two weeks ago, she recovered to run a fine race behind Evening Breeze and should be able to win races if staying sound.

Paree (s/s 93) has found form again. She tends to hang but that has not stopped her from winning three out of four starts since late June to lift her career tally to six. Another multiple winner to score at Turffontein was Kimberley raider Lebeona (s/s 90) in a MR 74 event on the lawn. He has now won 10 races and is a hardy sort providing plenty of fun for his connections, the Sportofkings syndicate.

Quine (s/s 99) is a very promising young Querari filly. She scraped home from Petty Officer (s/s 99), Colour Magic (s/s 98) and My Emblem (s/s 97) in a hot MR 89 handicap at Kenilworth. Her only blemish was a sluggish flop in the Champagne Stakes, but she got back to winning ways on Saturday for a third win from four outings.

Trainer Justin Snaith covered the trifecta in Friday’s Pinnacle Stakes at Fairview with sons of Jet Master, as True Master (s/s 100) Masterly (s/s 98) and Jet Explorer (s/s 97) went 1-2-3. They have won 21 races between them and are still earning stakes in this weaker centre, after competing in higher grades earlier in their careers.
