Fans were treated to two very good fillies demolishing their opposition in sprints over the weekend. Cold As Ice (speed score 106) was super-impressive when winning the Sceptre Stakes going start to finish over the Kenilworth 1200m, whilst Lazer Star (s/s 102) maintained her flawless record when winning the Swallow Stakes at Turffontein. Cold As Ice, in particular, is genuinely high class with awesome speed and a great temperament – punters who took the odds on at Interbet never had an anxious moment. Lazer Star also has a bright future and her progress under veteran conditioner, Ormond Ferraris is keenly awaited.
In other Highveld action, sprinter Dollar Dazzler (s/s 99) returned to best when easily winning a MR 88 handicap and will win more races based on this performance. Later on, Belong To Me (s/s 97) held off the rally of Burg (s/s 96) in a 1160m scuttle and both seem progressive three year olds.
Key race on the Kenilworth undercard was an 1800m heat where Surruptitius (s/s 101) gamely tried to wire the field but could not resist the smooth challenge of Independence (s/e 103). The victor seems officially underrated, with potential to keep winning at the right handicap level. Three year old Peace Pact (s/s 98) could also be worth taking out of this race as a future wagering option – he tried hard but could not keep up with tough older rivals.
