Soft conditions prevailed over the weekend at Turffontein, whilst the Durbanville track is currently hard and fast. These varying circumstances aided some horses and worked against others and are just another tricky piece of the puzzle form students battle to solve.

The very fast Potalo Palace filly, Singforafa outdueled Che Bella as both recorded smart figures of 103 in the listed Bauhinia Handicap over 1000m. At the opposite end of the distance spectrum, Fayrooz (finishing fraction 112%) and Christopher Robin (108%) drew well clear of toiling rivals in the Oaks and Derby trials respectively.

Mighty High (s/s 98+) ran out a fluent winner of the Grade 2 Senor Santa Stakes, after a protracted tussle with Mr Flood. Rebels Champ was close up in third. This high-class daughter of Pathfork has a victory over Celtic Sea in the G1 Allan Robertson back in 2018 to her credit, so was most favourably handicapped on her best efforts and duly produced for trainer van Vuuren and connections.

The majority of horses’ performances wax and wane depending on the changing circumstances under which they race, together with shifts in their physical condition. But there are a few notable exceptions that are paragons of consistency. One such admirable thoroughbred is the Paul Reeves trained sprinter, Skidoo who runs figures of 96 and 97 like clockwork. He deservedly attained a sixth career win at Durbanville on Saturday, going all the way to stave off Savea, to round off a fine hat-trick this year.
