Sovereign Mint (speed score 96) completed a hat-trick for canny trainer Robbie Sage when eking out a tight decision in a Pinnacle Stakes at Turffontein. The progressive Judpot gelding has now won four from nine starts, and is fulfilling the promise shown late in 2013.
Yogas Govender has his string in fine fettle at the onset of Spring and after a big odds double on Wednesday, followed up with another pair at Durbanville. Antonio’s Fortress (speed score 96) enjoyed the drop in class to win a MR 85 handicap, with debutante Lohnromance easily winning her Maiden, ridden hands and heels.
Speedy mare Knock ‘em Out (s/s 95), who raced recently in a key contest behind De Kock, scored in a scuttle around the bend, though it was nip and tuck before she just got the better of a much improved Moulin Royale (s/s 94). The runner up only succumbed late and should make amends soon as she is especially effective at Durbanville, her favourite track.
Best score on the day went to Stratocruiser (s/s 98) who has really found form since his breathing issues have been sorted out. He stalked the top weight Captive Action (s/s 96) before pouncing 50m from the line and going on to score a third win from his last four starts.
At Scottsville, Easy Lover (s/s 92) Malted and Bolted (s/s 91) and Son Of Orimandes (s/s 89) put up solid sprint performances. Saratoga Dancer‘s (s/s 90) romp in a Maiden race indicates above average ability and was a third winner on the day for trainer Duncan Howells.
