Tail of the Comet (speed score 100+) trounced opposition in the Cape Racing Ready To Run Stakes over 1400m at Durbanville, accelerating sharply, then cruising in four lengths clear before being eased down. He looks on track for a crack at the Cape Guineas, with a notable turn of foot and versatility his best characteristics.

Sean Tarry’s runner has run four times, each in a different city in South Africa (‘Maritzburg, Durban, Joburg & Cape Town) and has handled the travel and varying course configurations in his stride. Tail of the Comet is a remarkable talent who already can exceed a figure of 106, which puts him in the upper echelon.

The Azzie stable struck another blow for Highveld trainers with Kiss me Captain winning a competitive South Easter sprint (aptly named given the raging wind which dropped a huge blue gum tree onto one of the horse transport trucks.)

The flashy Captain of All filly (s/s 104) staved off Countdown’s charge to build on a fine winning record – she has now won half her ten starts and will be a principal contender in Graded feature sprints for fillies and mares during the Cape Summer season.

October Morn (s/s 99) also impressed in the finale when coming back from a break to show considerable dash over the short cuts. Her time was just .4 seconds slower than Kiss Me Captain, not bad given that she is a year younger.

The extremely talented, Wecangoallnight (s/s 107) attained the highest number on the card. Allowed to stride at speed upfront he skipped clear in the straight and held off challenges from a rejuvenated Cosmic Highway and G1 winner, Trip of Fortune, who was understandably not yet at a peak on his comeback run.

This was a well-deserved victory for Eric Sands’ gelding who has succumbed narrowly on a few occasions over sprints. He’s bred for further – Eric’s challenge has been to teach him to settle and wait patiently for him to become more mature temperamentally, before stretching him out over suitable distances.
