Sandringham Summit, under Gavin Lerena, and Gimme a Nother produced two excellent performances to win their respective Gauteng Guineas on Saturday at Turffontein.
Both started favourite at around even money, both are sired by Gimmethegreenlight and both won as such short- priced horses ought to if the market is correct – totally dominating rivals.
We can appreciate their superiority visually. Sandringham Summit raced handy then made an early move to seize complete control of the race midway down the straight, whilst Gimme A Nother was dropped out to the back of the field from a wide draw by JP van der Merwe before finishing strongly from off the pace.
After crunching the numbers based on final times, the colt trained by David Niewenhuizen attained a speed figure of 105 and the still unbeaten filly, 104.
Factoring in the come home fractions, which were swift for both but especially so for the Mike de Kock conditioned Gimme a Nother, they merit sectional upgrades which could take her as high as 114 and the brilliant colt to 112 +.
It’s rare in the SA context for youngsters to hit these sorts of numbers making Sandringham Summit and Gimme a Nother elite class three-year-olds!
On the undercard, Unzen (s/s 106) is also worthy of mention after taking out the 1400m Pinnacle Stakes under a light weight. He was backed in from 5’s and won by three for the astute, Robbie Sage. The Erupt gelding was ridden by Kaiden Brewer.
