The strongest racing on the weekend was staged at Kenilworth and some really good performances were noted. Asstar (speed score 103) put his Durbanville flop behind him, when getting his tongue over the bit, to win a “mini-Merchants” in good style. Generous odds of 28-1 were available on Interbet as unforgiving punters spurned the son of Ashaawes after that costly Durbanville fail. Glen Puller is a fine horseman and he fitted different tack to Asstar to help him breathe better which did the trick.
Earlier, Acrostar (s/s 100) produced a huge finish to blow past the entire field within a furlong and should hold her own in upcoming fillies’ features during the Summer based on this performance. In a later race, stable mate Readytogorightnow (s/s 103) also flashed a brisk closing fraction to zip past Ashton Park (s/s 101) and is another to be pitched against tougher fields.
In a race run slow early then with the turbo boosters being turned on in the straight, Act Of War (s/s 98+) just got the better of Mljet (s/s 97) in the Cape Classic. The winner came from behind Mljet and was conceding 4.5kg – an excellent run. The second horse who ran as high as 103 during the KZN season, was making his Cape debut and will also prefer more ground, so there was some honour in defeat.
Canny colleague James Goodman has been calling it well in Durbs with a strong sequence of accurate tipping. In Friday night action at Greyville, Bold Inspiration was heavily traded on Interbet to win the Michaelmas Handicap and got the job done under “Superman” Marcus. The same pilot was to close out the weekend when winning the Algoa Cup on 3-1 shot Disco Al, as the gelding followed up on his success in this event last year, when it was run on the Poly.
