When race-goers scan the card for Wednesday’s Kenilworth meeting they will notice the unfamiliar listing of M. Steyn, in-between stalwart brothers, Andries and Piet Steyn. This new trainer willing to take the plunge in a tough profession is young Margot, daughter of Piet, a salt-of-the-earth character in Cape racing.

“I realise this is not a game for sissies, and my father asked me if I’m really sure about my decision to get fully involved, but racing is in my blood,” the bubbly university graduate declared. She worked for her father after completing a degree in Human Resource Management and also had a stint with Yogas Govender when he ran the Plattner Racing string. Margot gained further experience with Michael Miller in Durban before seizing this opportunity to set up on her own.

She has 13 horses in training at the Old Barn section in Milnerton and is receiving initial support from breeder Spencer Cook and Tootie Hansen of The Rock Stud Farm. Nearly all of the start-up string comprise unproven babies – Margot sees her primary task as “getting the best out of them. “ She continued, “It’s a small yard, so I can give the horses’ personal attention and I do much of the work riding myself.”

Steyn has taken on a daunting challenge during a period when smaller stables are struggling to compete with the big guns. The major barns attract deep pocketed owners able to buy quality stock who then typically go on to win the bulk of available stakes in a self-perpetuating cycle of success. Smaller yards are left scrambling for the scraps.  Training racehorses has significant barriers to entry in South Africa as a result, though many training legends themselves started small before making a fortuitous breakthrough with a notable champion, or else steadily forging reputations doing admirable work with moderate horses.

Margot has received a solid grounding from Piet Steyn, a hardy and experienced horseman who has stayed competitive over the years, working with inexpensive thoroughbreds. He will continue to be a bountiful source of knowledge to his determined daughter. ‘My Dad is very supportive and is always around to help me if needed.” she said appreciatively.

First timers Little Star and Heartburn start Steyn’s exciting journey in Race 1, though not much is expected of them on debut. Margot is a rare addition to the training ranks and with young blood sorely needed in the game, well-wishers will be hoping that she makes a successful go of things…
